UKIP Takes Conservative Seat and Almost Grabs Labour Seat

Two victories for UKIP, one a clean win and the other a near win. In the second case, the party went from less than 3% of the vote in 2010 to almost winning the Labour seat.

UKIP Wins First Commons District With Conservative Defector
Douglas Carswell, who forced a special election in his coastal district of Clacton when he defected from the Conservatives to UKIP on Aug. 28, became the party’s first elected lawmaker, holding the seat with 60 percent of the vote, one of the biggest swings in British electoral history.

While Carswell’s victory was expected, UKIP’s performance in the night’s other special election, in the district of Heywood and Middleton, showed it’s now also a threat to the opposition Labour Party.

UKIP's electoral success is a case of social mood in action and it is looking as though the timing of the UK elections may line up in UKIP's favor. UKIP is also still riding the wave of popular discontent and hammers away at the immigration issue almost every chance it gets.
